Catching Up with Johanna

Johanna is thrilled to announce that, during this past summer, she has founded a new Baroque ensemble, Laura's Harp. The group comprises sopranos Johanna and Judith Milardo, contralto Imelda Franklin Bogue, lutenist Philippa Dunne, and gamba/lirone player Motomi Igarashi. The group is named after the still extant harp of Laura Peverara, who who was one of the famous Concerto delle Donne in Ferrara during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. 

The ensemble's first project is a program of works by the Italian early 17th century composer, Barbara Strozzi. Working with Strozzi scholar Susan Mardinly, Laura's Harp will present a program of Strozzi's works for one, two, and three voices with continuo, on March 28, 2010, at the Hartt School, University of Hartford.

Johanna also recently reconnected with composer Kim Sherman, who wrote incidental music for a play reading that was one of Anonymous 4’s earliest public performances! Kim is writing some beautiful settings of Shakespeare sonnets, which she and Johanna are looking forward to collaborating on.

Besides maintaining her own private voice studio. Johanna teaches for Musika and Encore Music Studios. During 2008, she was on the music theory faculty of the Westchester Conservatory. In August 2009 she presented a masterclass in Baroque Performance Practice during the Summer Vocal Academy at the Westchester Conservatory of Music. In 2007 she presented a lecture/demonstration about medieval music to music and non-music majors at Long Island University (C.W. Post).

Among her other pursuits, she has been a consulting editor for the recently published NPR Listeners’ Guide to Classical Music; has sung for the score of a PBS documentary, and did a stint at WNYC-FM Public Radio as a classical music host.
