Program
Descriptions:
Shall We Gather: Sacred Song from Medieval England to Early America
A program to satisfy all of Anonymous 4’s fans: the first half is a compact medieval Ladymass, with British chant and polyphony from their bestselling Ladymass cds; the second half is a collection of Anglo-American sacred and secular songs from their hit cds American Angels and Gloryland.
Long Time Traveling, with Darol Anger and Scott Law
We are joined by Darol Anger (violin and mandolin) and Scott Law (guitar) in this show, as we sing religious ballads, folk songs, folk hymns, and gospel songs from our Gloryland and American Angels recordings, along with instrumental gems from our two virtuoso players and a few surprises along the way.
Secret voices: The Sisters of Las Huelgas
This varied repertoire of 13th-century polyphony and sacred Latin song in the Spanish Las Huelgas Codex was collected for a convent of noble and aristocratic women. In spite of a rule forbidding the singing of polyphony by the women of their order, these sophisticated ladies sang the most beautiful, advanced, and demanding music from all over Europe in the 13th century.
The Cherry Tree: Songs, Carols and Ballads for Christmas
The Cherry Tree is Anonymous 4’s newest program of medieval English carols, interwoven with English-influenced American sacred songs. It was inspired by the miracle ballad, The Cherry Tree Carol, which flourishes both in the British Isles and in America.
A Medieval Ladymass: English chant and polyphony
Anonymous 4 draws from their ever-popular repertoire of 13th- and 14th-century English chant and polyphony devoted to Mary for this program, which runs straight through, with no intermission. The music on this program can be heard on the group’s best-selling recordings An English Ladymass and A Lammas Ladymass. Premiered at the Edinburgh Festival, August 2007.
