LONG TIME TRAVELING with Darol Anger and Scott Nygaard

We are joined by Darol Anger (violin and mandolin) and Scott Nygaard (guitar) in this show of hits from our Gloryland and American Angels recordings, along with instrumental gems from our two virtuoso players and a few surprises along the way.
Gloryland is the diary of our second pilgrimage to the roots of Anglo-American vocal music. The journey has led us to more of the most beautiful religious ballads, folk songs, folk hymns, and gospel songs ever
to be found. Each sung poem contains a world of meaning in itself: together they tell a story of love and loss, hope and redemption.
Our versions of the religious ballads and folk songs on this program
follow the performances of traditional singers from the Ozark and the
Appalachian mountains. We sing shape note tunes in the spare three-part
harmonizations in which they first appear in the nineteenth-century tunebooks.
Similarly, we have chosen to perform two gospel songs as they were originally
set by their composers. The other hymns and gospel songs on Gloryland were
arranged by members of Anonymous 4.
American
Angels
A program of songs of hope,
redemption
and glory from the
late 18th-century New
England tunesmiths,
the Southern
shape-note tunebooks of the
19th century,
and gospel hymns
made popular by Ralph
Stanley, Emmylou
Harris, Dolly Parton,
and the film, "O Brother,
Where Art
Thou?" The music in this
program comes from an
interweaving
of oral and written traditions,
in which favorite older
tunes have
survived and flourished from
one generation to the next,
and are
still sung today in many different
settings. A few highlights
of American
Angels include the fuging
tune "Blooming Vale,"
shape-note settings
of the folk hymns
"Amazing Grace" and
"Wayfaring Stranger,"
and gospel songs
"Shall We Gather At the
River" and
"Angel Band." We’ll also include some a cappella gospel songs from our hit recording Gloryland.
A Medieval Ladymass/An English Ladymass
Beautiful British chant and polyphony in honor of the Virgin Mary from our two programs An English Ladymass and A Lammas Ladymass
Prologue to Polyphony
Especially compiled for the 2007 Edinburgh festival, this program traces the development of medieval polyphony in western Europe, and draws from our programs “1000: A Mass for the End of Time,” “Miracles of Sant’Iago,” “la bele marie” and “Love’s Illusion.”
La bele
Marie
Our program
of 13th-century
French music in
honor of the Virgin Mary.
The repertoire
consists of conductus --
marvelously varied one-,
two- and three-voice
songs in Latin -- and
popular medieval chansons
in honor
of "la bele marie."
Voices
of Light
An oratorio by Richard
Einhorn , with choir, soloists and orchestra, and
Anonymous 4 as the voice of
Joan, accompanying
the powerful silent film
"The Passion of Joan of
Arc."
